Download Escape from the Wasteland PDF/eBook

By:Susan Jolliffe Napier
Published on 1995 by Harvard Univ Asia Center
ISBN 9780674261815

Synopsis
Lurid depictions of sex and impotence, themes of emperor worship and violence, the use of realism and myth - these characterize the fiction of Mishima Yukio and Oe Kenzaburo. Napier discovers similarities as well as dissimilarities in the work of two writers of radically different political orientations. Napier places Yukio's and Kenzaburo's fiction in the context of postwar Japanese political and social realities and, in a new preface for the paperback edition, reflects on each writer's position in the tradition of Japanese literature.

Elizabeth Bowen

Download Elizabeth Bowen PDF/eBook

By:Lis Christensen
Published on 2001 by Museum Tusculanum Press
ISBN 9788772896243

Synopsis
The Anglo-Irish author Elizabeth Bowen (1899-1973) entered the literary arena in the 1920s, at a time when the English novel was flourishing and the short story beginning to be recognised as a serious art form. Between 1927 and 1938 she published six full-length novels; it was largely the pressures of the Second World War that then caused eleven years to elapse before she brought out her much acclaimed novel of wartime London, 'The Heat of the Day' (1949). This novel, a medley of romance, spy-story and psychological thriller, anticipated the three novels Bowen went on to write in the 1950s and 1960s, which are all concerned with problems of identity and communication; all deal with the passing of time and the influence of the dead on the living, and all demonstrate the dangers of looking into the past for a present-day sense of security and identity. Christensen examines some aspects of theme and strategy in the last four novels, glancing also at Bowen's post-war stories. Brief presentations and plot summaries are placed in the context of her life and dealt with in a separate section.

The Company We Keep

Download The Company We Keep PDF/eBook

By:Wayne C. Booth
Published on 1988-01-01 by Univ of California Press
ISBN 9780520062108

Synopsis
In The Company We Keep, Wayne C. Booth argues for the relocation of ethics to the center of our engagement with literature. But the questions he asks are not confined to morality. Returning ethics to its root sense, Booth proposes that the ethical critic will be interested in any effect on the ethos, the total character or quality of tellers and listeners. Ethical criticism will risk talking about the quality of this particular encounter with this particular work. Yet it will give up the old hope for definitive judgments of |good| work and |bad.| Rather it will be a conversation about many kinds of personal and social goods that fictions can serve or destroy. While not ignoring the consequences for conduct of engaging with powerful stories, it will attend to that more immediate topic, What happens to us as we read? Who am I, during the hours of reading or listening? What is the quality of the life I lead in the company of these would-be friends? Through a wide variety of periods and genres and scores of particular works, Booth pursues various metaphors for such engagements: |friendship with books,| |the exchange of gifts,| |the colonizing of worlds,| |the constitution of commonwealths.| He concludes with extended explorations of the ethical powers and potential dangers of works by Rabelais, D. H. Lawrence, Jane Austen, and Mark Twain.

The Gernsback Days

By:Mike Ashley,Michael Ashley,Robert A. W. Lowndes
Published on 2004 by Wildside Press LLC
ISBN 9780809510559

Synopsis
|In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in Hugo Gernsback, and the start of a serious study of the contribution he made to the development of science fiction. . . . It seemed to me that the time was due to reinvestigate the Gernsback era and dig into the facts surrounding the origins of Amazing Stories. I wanted to find out exactly why Hugo Gernsback had launched the magazine, what he was trying to achieve, and to consider what effects he had-good and bad. . . . Too many writers and editors from the Gernsback days have been unjustly neglected, or unfairly criticized. Now, I hope, Robert A. W. Lowndes and I have provided the grounds for a fair consideration of their efforts, and a true reconstruction of the development of science fiction. It's the closest to time travel you'll ever get. I hope you enjoy the trip.|-Mike Ashley, Preface
